Canadian grocery products are more important to identify than ever, and one Ontario grocery store is making it easy to find them.

In the wake of the U.S. government’s implimentation of tariffs on a slew of major imports from Canada, and the Canadian government’s retaliatory action which sees 25 per cent tariffs places on a swath of American products, more Canadians than ever are making an effort to search for Canadian brands and products produced within the country.

While certain retailers, like the LCBO, as well as a number of restaurants, have already taken action by removing American products from their shelves and menus, others will continue to stock products from south of the border, meaning Canadian consumers will have to take extra care when shopping if they hope to keep their pantry stocked with Canadian goods.

While that one viral sketch from This Hour Has 22 Minites did a pretty good job at identifying a number of Canadian alternatives to American products, it can still require extra time and energy that, let’s face it, few of us have at this point, to find more — and that’s why one local grocery chain is making it easy.

In the wake of the tariff-related onslaught, Canada’s largest organic grocery chain, Healthy Planet, has introduced a new program that will clearly mark Canadian brands as well as both Made-in-Canada and Product of Canada items.

The “#HealthyCanadianSwap” program will sees a devoted Canadian products section added to their online store, on top of a filtering option that allows shoppers to specifically browse Canadian goods.

Canadian products online and in-store will also be marked with a highly-visible red maple leaf tag to help make decisions at a glance.

“With economic uncertainties ahead, now is the time to invest in homegrown businesses that create jobs, foster innovation and reflect Canadian values,” says Healthy Planet’s General Manager, Muhammad Mohamedy.

The #HealthyCanadianSwap program has already taken effect, and you can check it out both on Healthy Planet’s online store and at your local physical location.

Healthy Planet currently operates 37 locations across Ontario, including 10 in Toronto.
