Midland Ontario’s butter tart festival is officially returning for its 12th year this spring for an entire day that’s dedicated to showcasing and munching on the buttery, Canadian sweet treat.
Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival will be back this June as vendors from across the province travel to Midland in hopes of being awarded the festival’s top title of the best butter tart.
Over 200 vendors will be onsite, selling everything from butter tarts (of course) to handmade items. The variety of butter tarts you’ll find include plain, raisin, walnut, maple, bacon, coconut, PB&J, s’mores, cheesecake, pumpkin, and much more.
The inaugural Butter Tart Festival back in June 2013 sold out of 10,000 butter tarts by 11 a.m., and the number of treats available for sale has steadily increased every year. In 2024, the festival saw 300,000 butter tarts sold by its vendors, and attendance has already increased to approximately 60,000 visitors just for the one-day event.
If you’re confident in your butter tart recipe, you can also apply to participate in the Egg Farmers of Ontario Butter Tart Contest. Judging takes place in the Rotary Hall inside the Midland Cultural Centre on the day of the festival, where the public is invited to watch the judges undertake the important task of finding Ontario’s best butter tart.
The contest features both traditional and wild style categories, and judges in the past have included celebrities, chefs, food and travel bloggers, and local dignitaries who all share a common love of butter tarts.
While you’re in Midland, a lot of downtown shops will be offering festival sales, deals, and sweet treats, so make sure to set some extra time aside after you down a couple (or several, we’re not judging) butter tarts.
Make sure to mark your calendars, because the sweetest day of the year is fast approaching. Ontario’s Best Butter Tart Festival takes place on June 14, 2025.
