A Toronto wellness club that was a hot spot for cold plunges and saunas just announced that they’ve shut down after only a handful of months in business.

While luxury wellness spaces in Toronto only seem to be multiplying, from Sweat and Tonic opening their new location in The Well and an upcoming Yorkville spot to boutique ventures like Othership and Nud Body rallying cult followings, it seems like everyone’s gotten the memo that feeling good feels good.

In spite of the ever-mounting popularity of the city’s wellness spaces — or, perhaps, because of it, — though, not every venture can survive, and short-lived Liberty Village spot, Active Remedy Club (ARC) is latest to announce it has closed its doors for good.

Officially opening for business in June of 2024, the club was a first-of-its-kind venture in Toronto, taking on a holistic approach to recovery that allowed its members to socialize, take classes and unwind using personalized recovery plans.

Occupying a 4000 square-foot space in Liberty Village, the club featured an enormous, 55-person dry sauna, ice baths, a social lounge and even IV-drip therapy for every recovery-based need you could think of — from a hamstring pulls to hangovers.

It appears as though ARC’s reign in the city was destined to be a short-lived one, however, as the club recently took to their Instagram to announce that the club has closed for good as of Saturday, Dec. 7 after just over five months.

“We are deeply grateful for your support and the connections we’ve built together,” the post reads. “It is with regret that Active Remedy Club will be closing its doors.”

The post then goes on to confirm that all existing memberships and credits were honoured up until Dec. 6 at 11 p.m., at which point the club shut down and refunds will be offered on any outstanding passes, credits or memberships.

Active Remedy Club declined blogTO’s request for comment on the closure, so, for now, there is no further information on the reasoning behind the closure, nor whether ARC will be making a comeback in the near future.

For all those members who’ve lost their go-to wellness spot in the city, perhaps the silver lining here is that you now have the chance to try out a brand-new one — there are only about a million, after all. And counting.

In fact, in the wake of the announcement, fellow fitness club, Sweat and Tonic, took to their Instagram to announce that they’d be offering free access to their pool at The Well to any ARC members who still have extra credits purchased prior to Dec. 4, up until Dec. 31.

“It’s never easy to see a fellow local business close their doors, as we know the incredible amount of hard work, dedication, and passion that goes into building a special community and space no matter how big or small,” the post reads.

“As a gesture of good will, and to show our support for the wellness community and our friends in Toronto, we’re donating complimentary pool deck access at Tonic Spa to all existing ARC community members who have remaining unused ARC credits purchased prior to December 4, at no cost.”

Active Remedy Club was formerly located at 171 East Liberty.
