Toronto transit users may get a taste of déjà vu this Groundhog Day, as this coming weekend will be among the 38 full-weekend subway closures TTC riders will have to contend with in 2025.
The transit agency plans to shut down service on a busy portion of the Line 1 Yonge-University subway in the heart of downtown for the entire weekend of Saturday, February 1 and Sunday, February 2, 2025.
Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming subway closure.
The TTC will shutter service on Line 1 from St. George to St. Andrew stations, a stretch of the route spanning 2.75 kilometres and six stations.
As with previous full-weekend closures, the TTC is using this extended service interruption as a window to carry out work on its overwhelming repair and upgrade backlog.
According to the transit agency, these latest closures will allow work on multiple overlapping projects, including construction on a new elevator for Museum Station, upgrades at Queen’s Park and St. Patrick stations, and track work between St. George and St. Andrew stations.
If the cut in subway service wasn’t enough for commuters, the TTC has stated that it will not run shuttle buses during the closure, citing “ongoing construction along the route, which would impact the consistency of shuttle bus service.”
Commuters relying on this portion of Line 1, while inconvenienced, won’t be entirely out of luck.
The TTC advises passengers travelling downtown to “take any eastbound streetcar from Queen’s Park, St. Patrick, Osgoode or St. Andrew stations to connect with the Yonge side of Line 1,” with extra service to be added to these routes to account for spillover traffic during the closure.
During the closure, Museum, Queen’s Park, and St. Patrick stations will remain inaccessible to the public, while other stations along the outage will remain open for customers to purchase fares and connect to surface transit.
