A group of high school students from Alliston, Ont., have garnered international attention after being invited to showcase their work on a global stage.
The Banting Memorial High School robotics team, known as Team 7200, will represent Canada at Hannover Messe, the world’s largest trade fair held in Hanover, Germany showcasing leading-edge technologies.
The event features over 4,000 vendors from more than 150 countries and attracts around 150,000 attendees.
“Canada is the partner host country, which is a big deal, and we are creating an interactive booth that is very Canadian for people to visit,” said Banting Robotics teacher and the team’s lead mentor Bryan Haas.
Haas said the trade show puts a spotlight on youth education in technology fields.
The Banting team will feature its creation, ‘Goalia,’ a lightweight, incredibly strong and unmistakeably Canadian robot goalie.
“We are currently rebuilding the goalie, as we took it all apart for parts last year,” Haas noted in an email to CTV News. “The new one will be a big upgrade, and made out of broken hockey sticks.”
More than 70 Canadian companies attended the 2024 trade show in Hanover.
The Banting students will head to Germany for the 2025 trade fair taking place from March 31 to April 4.
