Toronto Fire Services say “multiple people” were transported to hospital with injuries after a natural gas fire at a high-rise building in the city’s north end on Tuesday morning.

Fire officials told Global News up to six people were injured in the incident, which happened on the 22nd floor of a building on Esther Shiner Boulevard near Leslie Street, just north of Highway 401.

A fire spokesperson said some workers were in what appears to be a utility room when the fire broke out. They stopped short of calling the incident an explosion or gas leak.

When firefighters arrived, there was light smoke visible but no fire. However, they said there were remnants of fire damage.

Police said the call came in at around 9:30 a.m. for an industrial accident at a building under construction and that all of the workers were evacuated.

Toronto paramedics said they were “dealing with lots of patients” but could not confirm exactly how many were treated and/or taken to hospital.

It’s unclear what exactly caused the incident. An investigation is underway and the Ministry of Labour has been notified.

More to come.
