One location of a beloved bodega, bakery and pizzeria in Toronto is shutting down this weekend.
Founded in 2015, the aptly-named Mattachioni was born out of pizzaiolo and former Terroni chef, David Mattachioni’s dream to open a pizza joint of his own, and the result was an instant hit in the Junction Triangle.
Offering not only David’s well-loved wood-fired pies, but a complete suite of offerings from prepared panini and salads to a small selection of Italian grocery staples, the restaurant quickly became a staple in the neighbourhood.
If the way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, Mattachioni was amply loved.
So successful was David’s concept that, six years later, in 2021, the business expanded with a sister location in Little India, which promised to do everything the original did, only bigger and better.
Mattachioni East expanded on the grocery offerings that were initially limited at the original location with a robust selection of staples, from house-made pepperoncini, pizza dough and baked goods to local craft beers, while continuing to serve fresh pizzas, baked on location.
While the original location has been holding strong on Dupont for nearly a decade, though, the same, it seems, cannot be said for its sister location, as a member of the restaurant and store’s team recently took to a community Facebook group to announce that Mattachioni East will soon be closed for good.
“With great sadness I am letting you all know that Mattachioni will be closing our east end location,” the person writes.
“The last day will be Sunday, January 26th.”
The post garnered a massive outpouring of support from the business’ many local fans, who expressed their love of for Mattachioni’s breads, cakes and pizza, as well as their disappointment around the closure.
On the bright side, however, Mattachioni’s original location is set to remain in business and operate as usual for the foreseeable future.
At the time of publication, Mattachioni has not responded to blogTO’s request for comment on the reasons behind the closure, nor whether there are any plans in motion for the business to return to the city’s east end.
Mattachioni East is located at 1501 Gerrard East.
