Everything you need to know about Toronto Blue Jays home opener

The Toronto Blue Jays are just a few days away from getting things going on their 2025 season.

And while recent years haven’t brought too much playoff success, every campaign offers up a shot at new success.

The Blue Jays home opener is set for March 27 at the Rogers Centre against the Baltimore Orioles, with the first pitch at 3:07 p.m.

Here’s what Toronto’s team is slated to look like, with a few key players set to miss the start of the campaign due to injuries:

Starting rotation

  • Bowden Francis
  • Kevin Gausman
  • Chris Bassitt
  • José Berríos
  • Max Scherzer

Max Scherzer, the three-time Cy Young winner, is one of the biggest free-agent signings in team history and the only new face in the team’s bullpen. At age 40 and battling a hand injury to begin the season, his fans will be watching eagerly to see if he can bring that magic that’s made him one of the most dynamic pitchers of his era.

Bullpen

  • Jacob Barnes
  • Richard Lovelady
  • Yariel Rodriguez
  • Nick Sandlin
  • Brendon Little
  • Jeff Hoffman
  • Yimi Garcia
  • Chad Green

Jacob Barnes, Richard Lovelady, Nick Sandlin and Jeff Hoffman are new additions to Toronto’s bullpen (though Barnes had a stint with the team in 2021). The team will be with two-time All-Star reliever Jordan Romano for its first season since 2018, who left the franchise in free agency this offseason to sign with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Infielders

  • Bo Bichette
  • Ernie Clement
  • Andrés Giménez
  • Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
  • Will Wagner

Andrés Giménez came by way of the Cleveland Guardians in Toronto’s biggest trade of the winter. The 2022 All-Star second baseman has won the last three Gold Gloves at his position, helping to solidify one of the league’s best defensive teams.

Outfielders

  • Alan Roden
  • Myles Straw
  • Nathan Lukes
  • George Springer
  • Davis Schneider
  • Anthony Santander

Anthony Santander is the team’s most significant offseason addition in free agency, with the former Baltimore Orioles player joining the team on a five-year deal. Meanwhile, Myles Straw was acquired from Cleveland for future considerations, while prospect Alan Roden is set to make his Blue Jays debut this year.

Injured list

  • Outfielder: Daulton Varsho
  • Relievers: Zach Pop, Erik Swanson, Ryan Burr
  • Starter: Alek Manoah

Outside of the 26 players on the roster, six players with major league experience are currently sidelined with injuries. Manoah and Varsho are the two biggest names on the team’s injured list, with the former still suffering from the effects of a Tommy John Surgery in 2024.

Meanwhile, manager John Schneider offered an update on Varsho, who’s set to remain rehabbing in Florida after making an appearance at the Rogers Centre on Opening Day.

“If that looks like centre field every day, great. If it looks like it may be a couple of days on and off, and he can, great. Love what he’s doing offensively and the adjustments he’s made,” Schneider said.
