Almost 50,000 Ontario homes are in the dark as widespread blackouts impact the province amid a brutal ice storm, according to HydroOne’s outage map.

HydroOne confirms that over 49K homes in central and eastern Ontario are without electricity on Saturday afternoon as freezing rain weighs down tree branches and power lines.

“Power outages continue across central & eastern Ontario due to freezing rain,” stated the utility company in a post on X, assuring the public that “Crews are working as quickly & safely as possible.”

HydroOne’s social media post warns the public to “Stay safe, stay back from downed lines.”

Parts of the province may receive up to 25 millimetres of freezing rain by the time the system passes on Sunday.
